It’s only the third month of 2022 and there are already plenty of flagship phones out there. The key players in the smartphone market do not seem to stop at a single flagship model in particular. Today, Xiaomi 12 Pro against Samsung Galaxy S22 is in the race. Let’s find out which flagship offer is the best.

On the design side, Xiaomi opted for a rounded frame, a rear curvature and a smaller size. Different from its predecessor, the Mi 11, the brand has tended to improve ergonomics. As a result, the rounded frame feels more comfortable to hold. Meanwhile, Samsung has derived a similar design language from the Galaxy S21. Here too, the frames are rounded. The camera module always rests on an island integrated into the frame. In addition, it has Gorilla Glass Victus plus protection on the back. Xiaomi 12 Pro does not mention it on its back.

On the front, both phones provide AMOLED displays with variable refresh rates (LTPO). Xiaomi has a larger display, a 6.7-inch 120Hz panel with Quad HD+ resolution having a peak brightness of up to 1500 nits. Additionally, the display also supports HDR 10+ and Dolby Vision. While the Galaxy S22 houses a compact 6.1-inch 120Hz panel with Full HD+ resolution. It is also an HDR 10+ certified display. Peak brightness is 1300 nits on this one. For protection, Xiaomi has Gorilla Glass Victus while Samsung opted for Gorilla Glass Victus Plus.

Customers are also focusing on optics these days. Both phones have a fairly good optics here. Xiaomi 12 Pro flaunts a triple camera setup with 50MP resolutions for all three lenses. The main shooter is a 50MP with an f/1.9 aperture with PDAF and Dual Pixel OIS. It can shoot up to 8K at 24 fps and 4K at 60 fps. Here is a telephoto lens with an f/1.9 50MP resolution. It is capable of 2X optical zoom and also helps capture depth in portrait mode. Meanwhile, the 50MP ultrawide sensor has an f/2.2 aperture and 115° FOV. The front shooter is a 32MP for super clear selfies. It can capture videos at 1080p 60fps max.

Camera-wise, the Samsung Galaxy S22 also has a triple-camera setup. Here, the main camera is a 50MP with an f.1.8 aperture with dual pixel PDAF and OIS for stabilization. It can also capture 8K video at 24 fps and 4K video at up to 60 fps. The telephoto lens is a 10MP with an f/2.4 aperture. It also has 3X optical zoom and OIS. For the 120° ultra-wide FOV camera, the resolution is 12MP with an f/2.2 aperture. Although there is no OIS here, stabilization relies on the EIS. The front camera has a resolution of 10MP which can shoot up to 4K 60fps.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Software

Xiaomi has always offered flagship phones with Snapdragon chipset in Nepal. The case was not the same with Samsung which has always preferred its flagship Exynos variants. Now that Samsung has also brought Snapdragon variants of S22 lineup to Nepal, the battle becomes against the same chipset, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. As known, the flagship silicon is not cooler in terms of thermals.

Xiaomi 12 Pro has a heat-dissipating vapor chamber to manage heat. Samsung didn’t mention a cooling system on the Galaxy S22. Still, initial test reports showed no overheating on this device. For software, Xiaomi has new MIUI 13 on top of Android 12. MIUI 13 brings various bug fixes and optimizations rather than visuals and looks.

Whereas, the One UI 4.1 on Samsung is no less in terms of smoothness and performance. Additionally, the company announced that it provided 3 years of major Android updates and 4 years of security updates. Both skins have dozens of features and it depends on the user’s taste and personal preference.

Battery, 5G bands and others

As a larger phone, the Xiaomi 12 Pro has a larger 4600mAh Li-Po battery than the 3700mAh Li-iOn cell of the Samsung Galaxy S22. Xiaomi also excels in charging speed with 120W fast charging. The 120W charger can fill the battery in just 18 minutes as advertised. While Samsung has kept the same 25W fast charging technology. Both devices support wireless charging and reverse charging.

For 5G connectivity, Xiaomi 12 Pro offers 1, 3, 5, 8, 28, 38, 40, 41, 77, 78, 79 SA/NSA 5G bands. The number increases for the Samsung Galaxy S22. It provides 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 12, 20, 25, 28, 38, 40, 41, 66, 75, 77, 78 bands SA/NSA/Sub6 – SM-S901B 5G. Here Xiaomi is missing the mm-Wave bands which is not a big problem for Nepal as 5G is not there and mmWave is too far away.

The rest of the specifications are more or less similar. Both phones have a stereo speaker setup. One on the Xiaomi 12 Pro, however, is tuned by Harmon Kardon. As expected, there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack on any of the devices. There is Bluetooth 5.2 and Wifi 6 support on both phones. You also get an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

There’s no doubting the build quality, performance and optics of both phones; Xiaomi 12 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S22. Both counterparts have flagship features and share the same chipset. So what sets them apart? Xiaomi 12 Pro offers a higher resolution Quad HD+ panel with 527 PPI compared to the S22’s Full HD+ display with 425PPI. For lovers of compact phones, the Galaxy S22 is a better choice with a 6.1-inch screen.

Xiaomi 12 Pro apparently takes an edge in terms of camera resolutions. By equipping all three lenses with 50MP resolution, we can expect better image quality and better output. Meanwhile, Samsung’s cameras can’t be underestimated. It goes up against Xiaomi for the main camera. Moreover, Samsung’s camera optimization is known to be better in the competition. With the same chipset, ISPs are strong on both phones. So there shouldn’t be a drastic difference in the results.

Both MIUI 13 and One UI 4.1 are feature-rich skins. The choice depends solely on your personal preferences. For the update though, Samsung promised to provide four-year software update support. On the other hand, Xiaomi has been doing it for three years. For charging, Xiaomi’s 120W fast charging takes the crown from Samsung’s 25W fast charging.

In terms of price, Xiaomi 12 Pro might be cheaper, we’ll have to see it on March 17. The expected price of Xiaomi 12 Pro for the 8/256GB variant is Rs.1,00,999 while Galaxy S22 starts at Rs.1,12,999 for the 8/256GB variant.
